Team sports reach exciting end, world record watch

Themen's basketball competition reaches the semi-final stage (5:30pm, 9pm), while themen's footballbronze medallists will be decided (5pm) and themen's hockey tournament concludes (2pm, 7pm).

Will the world record fall inmen's speed climbing as that competition comes to an end (12:28pm)?Samuel Watson's already lowered his own mark of 4.79s down to 4.75s. But Watson himself posted a training video of him completing the 15m-high wall even quicker than that leading up to the Games. That time could certainly fall again.

Athletics: Lyles, McLaughlin-Levrone, Chopra in action

Noah Lyleswill aim to complete the second leg of a potential treble on 8 August as themen's 200m final(8:30pm) takes place. The U.S. national record holder has made no secret of the fact he wants to take downUsain Bolt's world record, and his personal best is just 0.12 seconds away from Bolt's mark.

Meanwhile, Indiawill be targeting a second athletics Olympic gold medal as defending championNeeraj Chopragoes in themen's javelin throw final(8:25pm). In Tokyo, Chopra became India's first individual Olympic champion since 2008 and the first in track and field. However, competition will be fierce as ever from the likes ofJakub Vadlejch, while Germany will have Julian Weber.

And then there's Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, the woman seemingly no one can beat. Having set a new world record (pending ratification) of 50.65 at the U.S. Trials, and with no-one else close, she is the runaway favourite in thewomen's 400m hurdles final (9:25pm), but don't count outFemke Bol, the only other woman to have run under 51 seconds.

Sailing: Singapore could win historic medal

The small Southeast Asian island state of Singapore has only had one Olympic champion in history, when Joseph Schoolingwon swimming gold at Rio 2016. That could change on Day 13 at theMarseille Marina, as sailing gets set to crown its firstkiteboarding champions in this new event (from 3:40pm if conditions allow).

That's thanks to Max Maeder, the 17-year-old who is already two-time reigning world champion despite his young age, in addition to silver in 2022 and three Youth World Championships titles. He also won gold at theAsian Games last year to add to a growing list of achievements.

Table tennis: Sweden stun Japan to reach men's team final

Wow! The table tennis men's team semi-final between Sweden and Japan has somehow come down to the last game of the last match in the tie.

Japan, the favourites to win this tie, won the first two matches – including a win forHarimoto Tomokazu against individual silver medallistTruls Möregårdh – but dropped the next two singles rubbers as the Swedes forced a deciding match.

Harimoto stepped up again and won the first two games of the decider, butAnton Kallberg managed to take the next two, before coming from behind in the fifth and deciding game of the fifth and deciding match to seal victory.

It means Sweden progress to the final to face either hot favourites People's Republic of China, or hosts France, who play tomorrow morning, and Möregårdh is guaranteed to win a second medal.

Handball: Denmark, Slovenia reach semis

After France's earlier shock elimination to Germany, we had two further men's handball quarter-finals to complete the semi-final lineups.

Denmark narrowly beat Sweden 32-31, whileSlovenia eliminated Norway 33-28 in what was the largest margin of victory among the four quarter-finals, with the other three all decided by a single goal.

The two winners from the evening's matches will face off in the semi-finals.

Basketball: France, USA reach women's semi-finals

Just as in the men's basketball event, the hostsFrance and favouritesUSA are each through to the semi-finals inwomen's basketball after comfortable wins this evening.

France defeated Germany 84-71, while USA beat Nigeria 88-74.A'ja Wilson top-scored for the U.S. with 20 points, adding 11 rebounds.

The hosts play Belgium while the U.S. face Australia's Opals in the last four on Friday.

Boxing: Oleksandr Khyzhniak wins men's 80kg gold

It's another split decision in the second boxing final of the day at Roland-Garros.

This one goes the way of Ukraine'sOleksandr Khyzhniak, the Tokyo silver medallist in the 75kg, who beats Kazakhstan'sNurbek Oralbay 3-2.

The two judges for Oralbay scored it 29-28, while Khyzhniak picked up two 30-27 cards and one 29-28.

Boxing: Erislandy Álvarez wins men's 63.5kg gold, beating home hope Sofiane Oumiha

Cuba's traditionally strong boxing squad will not leave Paris without gold, afterErislandy Álvarez narrowly won his men's 63.5kg final against France'sSofiane Oumiha, much to the disappointment of the home fans.

Álvarez won three of the judges' cards, 30-27, 29-28, and 29-28, while Oumiha took the other two 29-28, in a 3-2 split decision.

Sailing: Low winds wreak havoc on races, medals to be awarded on Thursday

We had four medal races scheduled in Marseille today in thesailing competitions, but in the end only two – the women's and men's dinghy medal races, themselves already postponed from Tuesday – could be completed before low winds ended hopes of any further sailing for the day.

The same lack of winds also forced the cancellation of the remaining opening series races in the men's kite and women's kite events, with just seven and six races in the opening series completed (just enough to hold a medal series under the rules).

It means four medals are due to be awarded tomorrow in sailing, with Friday the last potential reserve day – otherwise the opening series standings will decide medals.

Water polo: USA, Hungary reach men's semis after shoot-out wins

There was drama in both evening men's water polo quarter-finals as both matches were tied in regulation time and went to a shoot-out.

USA reached the last four at an Olympic Games for the first time since Beijing 2008 after overcoming Australia 11-10 (7-7 in regulation), and are joined byHungary who beat Italy 12-10 (9-9 in regulation).

Earlier in the day, defending champions Serbia beat Greece 12-11 in a repeat of the Tokyo 2020 final, whileCroatia knocked out Spain 10-8.

Serbia will face USA while Hungary play Croatia on Friday.

Finals set in women's hockey, men's volleyball

Earlier this evening, thePeople's Republic of China booked their spot in the women's hockey final againstNetherlands by defeatingBelgium in a shoot-out.

The Belgians had equalised in the last minute of regulation time to make it 1-1, and taken a 2-0 lead in the shoot-out, but eventually fell 2-3 to China.

Belgium will play Argentina for bronze.

Meanwhile,Poland reached their first men's volleyball gold medal match since 1976 after beatingUSA 3-2.

That was despite their libero, Pawel Zatorski, suffering an injury in the third set with no replacement available.

They will face hostsFrance in the final after the defending champions beat Italy 3-0 in the other semi-final.

Boxing: Yildiz, Petecio take women's 57kg bronze

The first two boxing semi-finals of the evening are now complete at Roland-Garros, meaning we know the identities of the women's 57kg bronze medallists.

Esra Yildiz of Türkiye and Philippines'Nesthy Petecio will leave Paris with bronze after falling to a 5-0 unanimous decision and 4-1 split decision respectively.

Taekwondo: Park Taejoon (KOR) wins men's 58kg gold after opponent withdraws during second round

The 2022 world championPark Taejoon is now an Olympic taekwondo champion aged just 20!

Park, representing the Republic of Korea, was utterly dominant in hismen's 58kg final against Azerbaijan'sGashim Magomedov, taking the first round 9-0 and leading the second 13-1 when Magomedov withdrew.

Bronzes went toMohamed Khalil Jendoubi of Tunisia and France'sCyrian Ravet, who won by default after his Italian opponent pulled out of the contest due to injury.

Wrestling: USA's Sarah Hildebrand wins women's 50kg freestyle gold

After the shock disqualification ofVinesh Phogat earlier today for missing weight, USA'sSarah Hildebrand had to readjust her plans, for she would now be facing Cuba'sYusneylis Guzman in the final.

No matter: Hildebrand has recorded a 3-0 points victory over her new opponent to take gold for USA!

Bronzes went toFeng Ziqi (CHN) and Japan'sSusaki Yui, who had been unbeaten in international competition until losing to Vinesh earlier in the competition. Susaki won her bronze-medal bout by technical superiority.

Weightlifting: Hou Zhihui wins women's 49kg gold with clean and jerk Olympic record

It's been a great day so far today for defending champions, and we have another repeat winner!

HouZhihui of People's Republic of China has taken gold in the women's 49kg weightlifting event, breaking the clean and jerk Olympic record along the way.

Hou lifted 89kg in the snatch and 117kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 206kg, just 1kg ahead of silver medallistMihaela Cambei of Romania.

Bronze went to Thailand'sSurodchana Khambao.

Athletics: Soufiane El Bakkali wins steeplechase gold again

The last final in the Stade de France tonight is themen's 3000m steeplechase.

After 1000m, it's an Ethiopian one-two-three withSamuel Firewu at the front.

Defending championSoufiane El Bakkali of Morocco is also towards the front, as is world record holderLamecha Girma.

Taekwondo: Panipak Wongpattanakit successfully retains women's 49kg title

The firsttaekwondo gold medal of these Olympic Games has been awarded at the Grand Palais, and it's gone to Thailand'sPanipak Wongpattanakit!

Panipak, the defending champion in the women's 49kg category, wins two of the three rounds against People's Republic of China'sGuo Qing in the final for a 2-1 win.

She's become the first Thai athlete in any sport to become a two-time Olympic champion.

Athletics: Nina Kennedy wins women's pole vault

Katie Moon misses her first attempt at 4.95m. She only has one left, having carried over a fault from 4.90m.

Nina Kennedy then also misses at 4.95m. But it doesn't matter if the reigning champion Moon can't clear 4.95m, as she didn't clear 4.90m.

And Moon brings the bar down!

Nina Kennedy is the Olympic champion – and she is in tears celebrating with her team, before developing a big smile as she hops for joy.

Athletics: Roje Stona produces shock win in men's discus with Olympic record

We're into the final round of throws in themen's discus throw final, with a surprise leader: Jamaica'sRoje Stona, at 70.00m, which broke Mykolas Alekna's briefly held Olympic record.

The world record holder Alekna has some work to do here.

Defending championDaniel Ståhl of Sweden fouls his final throw and his reign will end with him placing seventh.

The 2022 world champ, Slovenia'sKristjan Ceh, sits in fourth heading into this last round of throws. But that is well short and will mean he leaves Paris without a medal.

Australia's co-world championNina Kennedy clears 4.90m on her first attempt whileKatie Moon, her fellow world champion from Budapest 2023,andAlysha Newman each miss, Moon once and Newman twice.

These three women are already guaranteed the medals. And Moon, the defending Olympic champion, has opted to skip her last two attempts at 4.90m to move up to 4.95m.

Athletics: Quincy Hall stuns Matthew Hudson-Smith to win men's 400m

It's time for themen's 400m final.

Great Britain'sMatthew Hudson-Smith, in lane six, is the favourite.

Artistic swimming: People's Republic of China claim team gold

The team event in artistic swimming is all over, and we have a new champion in the event!

People's Republic of China were runaway leaders after the technical and free routines, and it's no real surprise that they also dominated today's acrobatic routine.

China end up with a total of 996.1389 points for gold.

USA claim silver, their first medal in this event in 20 years, on 914.3421 points.

Athletics: Five women left in pole vault final

We started with 19 women in the pole vault final, and we're down to the last five who have cleared at 4.80m: joint-world-champions Katie Moon (USA) andNina Kennedy (AUS), Switzerland'sAngelica Moser, Canada's Alysha Newman, andAmalie Svabikova – who has just set a new Czech national record by clearing that height.
