Step 1: Start with the Base Ingredient

What you choose for your base ingredient is personal preference.

Some people like to use spackling, some prefer dry wall mud.

My medium of choice is joint compound. I like that I can get a very large container at a very reasonable price.

Scoop out a generous amount of joint compound into your mixing bowl. The amount needed is dependent upon the size of your canvas.

For example, I used 4 heaping scoops of joint compound for my 24″x36″ canvas. Just to give you a ball park figure.

Step 2: Add Acrylic Paint

Next, add in 2-3 spoonfuls of white acrylic paint. There’s really no right or wrong amount. I tend to err on the side of more, rather than not enough. Two to three tablespoons should do it, if you prefer exact measurements.

Stir the acrylic paint into the joint compound. Really working at it. The more you stir the creamier it gets. Continue to work at it until you get it to the consistency you like.

Sometimes I go overboard and add in too much acrylic paint. No problem, you can thicken up your mixture by simply adding in more joint compound.

Not creamy enough? Pour a little more acrylic paint into the mix. And continue to stir.

Once you get it to the desired texture, it should look something like the picture below. Joint compound only Is on the left side. Joint compound with the acrylic paint is on the right.

My Honest Opinion

Ok, here’s my take on all of this….The acrylic medium (modeling paste) will give you amazing results, BUT from my experience, the only thing you really need is the acrylic paint.

You can pretty much get the same texture by just adding in more of the acrylic paint.
